The Correct Order to Apply Skincare Products (Morning and Night)

The short answer: apply products from thinnest to thickest texture, cleanser first and sunscreen or night cream last. In the morning that means cleanser, serum, moisturiser, then SPF. At night it's cleanser, treatment or serum, then a richer night cream on top. Get the order wrong and a heavier product can sit on the skin and block a lighter, more active one from absorbing properly, so you lose most of its benefit even if the product itself is a good one.

Why the order actually matters

Dermatologists generally recommend layering skincare from the thinnest, most watery texture through to the thickest, richest one. A lightweight serum applied after a heavy cream will mostly sit on top rather than absorbing, since the cream has already sealed the skin. Applying products the right way round lets each one reach the skin and do what it's actually formulated to do, rather than wasting product or diluting the effect of a more targeted step.

There's also a simple practical reason: consistency. A routine that's easy to remember and quick to repeat is one you'll actually stick with, and skincare only works with regular use over weeks, not the odd application here and there.

Morning routine order

1. Cleanser. A gentle cleanse in the morning removes any overnight buildup of oil and sweat, giving the rest of your routine a clean base.

2. Serum (optional). If you use a targeted serum, such as one with vitamin C or niacinamide, apply it after cleansing while skin is still slightly damp, which can help with absorption.

3. Moisturiser. A daily moisturiser locks in hydration and helps support the skin barrier through the day. A lightweight, multi-benefit formula works well here since it needs to sit comfortably under makeup or SPF without feeling heavy.

4. Sunscreen. Always the last step in the morning. Sunscreen needs to sit on top of the skin to do its job, and skipping it undoes a lot of the benefit of the steps before it, since UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of visible skin ageing.

Evening routine order

1. Cleanser (double cleanse if wearing makeup or SPF). Removing the day's makeup, sunscreen and grime properly is one of the most important skincare steps, and it's easy to rush. An oil-based cleanser followed by a gentle water-based one is a reliable way to get a proper clean without stripping skin.

2. Treatment or serum. Night is when actives like retinoids are typically introduced, since they can increase sun sensitivity and are best used when skin isn't exposed to daylight. Apply any treatment serum to clean, dry skin before moisturising.

3. Night cream. A richer night cream goes on last, sealing in the lighter layers underneath and giving skin a chance to work with a heavier, more nourishing formula while you sleep, when skin does much of its natural repair.

Common layering mistakes

Applying moisturiser before a serum. This is the most common mistake. Once a cream has sealed the skin, a serum applied on top mostly stays on the surface instead of absorbing.

Skipping SPF because moisturiser is already on. A moisturiser with added SPF can work, but many everyday moisturisers don't contain enough sun protection on their own. If your moisturiser doesn't specify an SPF, apply sunscreen as its own final step.

Using a night cream in the morning. Night creams are often richer and can feel heavy or greasy under makeup during the day. They're formulated to be used without that constraint, overnight.

Piling on too many active ingredients at once. More products isn't automatically better. Introducing one new active at a time makes it far easier to tell what's actually working, and easier to spot irritation early if something doesn't agree with your skin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct order to apply skincare products?

Generally: cleanser, then any treatment or serum, then moisturiser, and in the morning, sunscreen last. The rule of thumb is thinnest, most watery textures first and thickest, richest textures last.

Should moisturiser go before or after serum?

After. Serums are typically lighter and more concentrated, so they should reach the skin before a heavier moisturiser is applied on top.

Can I use the same moisturiser morning and night?

You can, but many people prefer a lighter formula by day and a richer one at night, since a heavier night cream can feel greasy under makeup or SPF during daytime hours.

Do I need a separate night cream?

Not strictly, but a dedicated night cream is usually formulated to be richer, since it doesn't need to sit under makeup or sunscreen and can focus purely on hydration and overnight comfort.

How long before I see results from a new routine?

Most people need several weeks of consistent use before noticing a real difference, since skin's visible changes lag behind what's happening at a cellular level.
